HONORING THE PAST, BUILDING THE FUTURE

Bentonville’s library story began in the late 1800s, when residents shared books among themselves long before a formal library existed. Small reading groups purchased books, passed them from person to person, and saved them in hopes of one day building a public collection for the entire community. By the early 1900s, these grassroots efforts grew into organized book clubs and small library spaces above local businesses and inside community buildings. In 1934, Bentonville officially established a city library, supported by volunteers, civic leaders, and donors who believed access to books could strengthen the town’s future. Over the decades, the library relocated several times—from City Hall to a remodeled church and then to the restored Massey Hotel site—as its collection and community use grew.

EXPANSION NOW OPEN

Today, the Bentonville Public Library continues that tradition of growth. A major expansion completed in 2023 increased the building's size by about 41%, adding new spaces for children, teens, creators, and community events. New features include a makerspace, digital creation lab, larger meeting areas, and outdoor learning spaces designed for gathering and collaboration. Supported by voters, donors, and community sponsors, the project reflects a shared commitment to lifelong learning and ensures the library remains a vibrant hub for generations to come.
